Strategic road in eastern Cuba widened

The road linking Guantánamo and Baracoa, near the eastern tip of the island, is undergoing a major expansion, Granma reported.

The project widens the pavement by three meters on each side, doubling the two-lane road’s width. Previously, broken-down vehicles posed major hazards on the narrow and curvy road.

Earthmoving along the stretch linking Guantánamo and San Antonio del Sur began in April. Nineteen of 40 kilometers planned for this year have been completed. The terrain of the strategic road, much of it along a rocky coastline and through steep mountains, poses multiple engineering challenges.
