According to the Instituto Nacional de la Vivienda, a 10-year plan for housing construction aims at satisfying 90 percent of the country’s housing needs by 2020, official business weekly Opciones reports.

Based mainly on self-help by homeowners and expanded production and distribution of construction supplies, the plan foresees an acceleration of housing construction to 60,000 units per year beginning in 2011. The plan also includes 500,000 renovations by 2015.

A recent ambitious push for housing construction after devastating hurricanes in 2008 fell short of its goal of 100,000 new units per year, due to lack of construction material and labor. Lack of, and deficient housing are among the top complaints of Cubans. According to official estimates the country of 11 million needs nearly 1 million housing units.
