State company Empresa Comercializadora de Maquinárias, Equipos y Artículos de Ferretería (Maquimport) has placed unspecified orders with foreign suppliers during the Trade Fair Holguín 2011 for a ferronickel plant. 

Earthmoving on the $500 million Venezuelan-Cuban joint venture plant at Las Camariocas started last May.

Maquimport will supply “parts, equipment and accessories” to Las Camariocas, according to Prensa Latina. The company also made purchases for the Empresa Mecánica del Níquel Comandante Gustavo Machín, which is owned by state company CubaNiquel.

The article didn’t say who the suppliers were. Companies from Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Russia, Sweden and Venezuela attended the Holguín fair.

Las Camariocas will supply a new Venezuelan stainless steel plant and other clients with 68,000 tons of nickel per year by 2013, nearly doubling Cuba’s nickel output. The Caracas-based Ferroniquel S.A. joint venture is taking over the mothballed skeleton of a factory started in the early 1990s by partners from then-Czechoslvakia.
