The Damex Shipbuilding & Engineering shipyard in Santiago — one of the few fully foreign-owned operations in Cuba — finished assembling a 600-ton multi-purpose cargo vessel that will be used by the Venezuelan navy, Prensa Latina reported.

The Damen Stan Lander 5612 is the first of four similar ships the shipyard in Cuba is assembling for Venezuela through 2013, under the ALBA trade and integration agreement. Damex has already delivered two tug boats to Venezuela, and is scheduled to build two patrol boats.

Damex director Isidro Campos said the ship was built within the agreed time and quality, according to Prensa Latina.

The Stan Lander was engineered by Ukraine-based Marine Design Engineering Mykolayiv. Built for coastal or port service, it can carry up to 42 containers or vehicles, thanks to a roll-on roll-off ramp at the bow.

Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards, the owner of the Santiago facility, is one of the world’s largest shipbuilders. The Cuban subsidiary was established in 1995 and is, according to its Website, “a self-sustaining organization.” Damex acts as a license holder and an aftersales service location for Damen Shipyards Holland, and can build new ships with a length of up to 100 meters.
