As she is completing her first year in power, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is planning to visit Cuba late this month, Agência Brasil reported.
The South American power has become an important investor in Cuba over the past few years; Brazilian government loan guarantees are subsidizing an expansion and construction of a container terminal at the Port of Mariel. Brazilian companies are also investing in soybean production and sugar.
According to the Brazilian state news agency, the Brazilian president is scheduled to arrive in Havana Jan. 31. Cuba was a top priority to Rousseff’s predecessor, Luiz Inácio ‘Lula’ da Silva, who visited Cuba three times in three years.Â
From Cuba, Rousseff is scheduled to travel to Haiti Feb. 1, where Cuba and Brazil operate a joint program to rebuild the earthquake-devastated country’s healthcare system.
