Electric utility announces rolling blackouts

CUBA STANDARD — After weeks of sometimes repeated breakdowns at the country’s crumbling thermoelectric power plants, state utility Unión Eléctrica (UNE) on Sept. 9 warned of “affectations in electric service tonight and the next days, due to the incapacity to cover the entire demand”, and announced rolling blackouts.

“A scheme of affectation blocks foreseen for these contingencies will be applied, which will be detailed in press in each territory,” the communiqué said.
