Mexico grants emergency authorization for Cuban vaccine

CUBA STANDARD — Mexico’s regulatory agency for pharmaceuticals granted emergency authorization to use a Cuban-made COVID vaccine.

Cofepris said that the Abdala vaccine was of sufficient quality, safety and efficacy to justify its use in Mexico. Abdala has shown efficacy above 90% in three doses with pre-Delta variants of COVID. According to Cuba’s Finlay Institute and the Center for Genetic and Biologic Engineering (CIGB), researchers in Cuba are working on an adaptation of the vaccine for the Omicron variant.
